EGLISE ABBATIALE DE SAINT GENIS DES FONTAINES

The Benedictine abbey of Saint-Génis-des-Fontaines was built in 780 by Sentimir.
Destroyed in the 9th century, it was rebuilt over the following decades. The church follows a Latin cross plan with very marked arms.
The 12th century renovation consisted of covering the building with vaults and decorating the facade, in which a lintel was integrated around the door, a major work of Romanesque sculpture from the 11th century.
The cloister was built at the very end of the Catalan Romanesque period (end of the 13th century).
Its specificity is characterized by the polychromy of its marbles: the white of Céret, the pink of Villefranche-de-Conflent and the black of Baixas.
Visual sheet available for toddlers and fun sheet for 6-13 year olds.
