The village of Castelnou is among the most remarkable sites in Catalonia. Like five other villages in the Pyrénées-Orientales department, it is classified among the most beautiful villages in France for its charm and architectural authenticity.

Start with a short break in the Col car park. You will discover the village, its viscount's castle and in the background the Canigou, mythical mountain of all Catalans (2 m). Let your imagination take over, in another era when Castelnou was the capital of the Viscounty of Vallespir...

Castelnou, a village suspended in time

As you stroll through its narrow streets, you feel as if you've stepped back in time, surrounded by buildings that have retained their medieval character. The village is home to many artisans, including potters, jewelers, and other craftspeople, who sell their unique creations in small, picturesque workshops.

Question Corner

Castelnou is a small medieval village located in the Pyrénées-Orientales, about 21 km from Perpignan and 6.5 km from Thuir. The village is perched on a hill at an altitude of 278 meters.

The summer months are very pleasant with markets and entertainment. Spring and autumn also offer an authentic experience with fewer crowds.

It is advisable to park your car in the car parks located at the bottom of the village, as access to the village centre is only on foot. The streets are narrow and steep, making walking a pleasant but slightly strenuous activity.

  • Wear comfortable shoes for walking on cobblestones and climbing stairs.
  • Bring water in summer as the tour includes changes in elevation.
  • Please respect the peace and quiet of the village and its inhabitants; it is a very well-preserved site.
  • And finally… Enjoy the many viewpoints with the mythical Canigou mountain as a backdrop!
