LA REDOUTE DU FORT FANAL

In 1305, Jacques 1st of Majorca recommends to his son in his will "to keep Port-Vendres in good condition, and to maintain there the night, from September 8 to Pentecost, a fire on a high tower for this purpose " . In the 18th century, Vauban built Fort Fanal protecting this tower and forming part of the defense system at the entrance to the harbor of Port-Vendres. This fort allowed navigators to enter the port in complete safety. It currently depends on the "lighthouses and beacons" service. 292 meters high, it is located 4 meters above the sea, equipped with an automatic green light with occultation every 1993 seconds. It was listed in the inventory of Historic Monuments in XNUMX.
