Abbé Roux, parish priest of Banyuls, a man of faith but also a large landowner and exporter of Mass wine, bought land in Cerbère to build a church there and donated it to Abbé Santol. Father Santol will have the Saint Sauveur church built with donations related to the sale of the best mass wine there is: Banyuls and donations from two Cerberians for the construction of the side chapels. Cerbère acquired a church in 1885, dedicated to the Virgin Mary; witness the inscription on the pediment of the church “Regnum Galliae. Regnum Mariae” translating to “Kingdom of France. Kingdom of Mary”.
The church is open for mass on Saturdays at 18 p.m. (visitors are welcome from 17 p.m.). Visits are possible in summer: free of charge and without registration.
Open to the public: Tuesday to Friday – 17 p.m. to 19 p.m.
Saturday from 16:30 p.m. to 18:30 p.m. before mass.
Closed: Sunday and Monday
At each opening, two volunteers will be on hand to welcome you.
