MÉMORIAL DE LA RETIRADA
About
The Memorial stands 2 kilometers from the town center of Cerbère, near the old customs post called Col des Balitres.
Erected to bear witness to the exile of Spanish republicans in 1939, “la retireda”: it describes the wait at the border post, political refugees in the cold and torn by hunger, before the French authorities decided to welcome them . Among them was the Spanish poet Antonio Machado who ended his days in Collioure.
The site is freely accessible all year round.
