The Memorial stands 2 kilometers from the center of Cerbère, near the old customs post called Col des Balitres. Erected to bear witness to the exile of the Spanish Republicans in 1939 “la retirada”. It describes the wait at the border post, political refugees in the cold and torn by hunger, before the French authorities decide to welcome them. Among them was the Spanish poet Antonio Machado who will end his days in Collioure.
