FORT SAINT ELME

Fort Saint Elmo is closed for renovations.
It is closed to visitors, visible only from the outside.
The origins of the fort date back to the 8th century. A tower was built on the hill overlooking the bays of Collioure and Port-Vendres.
In the 16th century, on the orders of Emperor Charles V, a six-pointed star-shaped fort was built around it.
This type of architecture foreshadows that of Vauban. It also offers an exceptional viewpoint over the entire Côte Vermeille.
