In order to break the monotony of the motorways and to celebrate the opening of Spain to the international network at the end of Francoism, the Société des Autoroutes du Sud-Est commissioned from the architect Ricardo Bofill a monument which would take place at the border between Catalonia and France.
Built in 1976 on an artificial mound where the tons of earth extracted during the construction of the highway were dumped, the building has no other function than symbolic. A French garden surrounds a sort of red brick temple reproducing the Catalan crest and flag. Integrated into the landscape, it nevertheless marks a counterpoint with the peaks of the Pyrenees and nature. A work called “La Pirámide”.
