Built in the middle of the remains of the barracks, witnesses to the fate of more than 50 people, the Camp de Rivesaltes Memorial is an extraordinary contemporary building, designed by architect Rudy Ricciotti. It exposes, over more than 000 m1000, the history of the camp of Rivesaltes, which interned since 2 Spanish Republicans, foreign Jews and Gypsies, to become from 1941 to 1945 center of deposit of prisoners of war of the Axis and, in from 1947, a transit camp for the Harkis and their families.
The Memorial is also a place of reference for the history of forced population displacements during the XNUMXth century and questions the displacements of exiles today. A cultural, artistic and scientific program (temporary exhibitions, conferences, screenings, etc.) is offered throughout the year.
Military camp, transit camp, supervised accommodation center, regrouping camp... Place where the destinies of children, women and men crossed according to tragic events between 1938 and 1970, this camp is a tragic witness of the dark years of the 20th century.
This site of more than 600 hectares, straddling the communes of Rivesaltes and Salses is unique in its historical specificity, its dimensions, its authenticity which still allows you to feel what the reality of a camp was like.
