Today, we're taking you on a bucolic journey to discover Charles Rennie Mackintosh (1868–1928), an accomplished artist from Glasgow, Scotland, who fell in love with Port-Vendres and Roussillon. Follow in his footsteps through the enchanting places he loved so much, and immerse yourself in the fascinating world of this visionary artist!
After spending several months on vacation in Roussillon on the arm of his wife and artistic partner, Margaret McDonald, it was in 1925 that they both returned to reside in this “magnificent country tinged with pink, happy to find its warmth and its sun”.

Rich in artistic training at the Glasgow School of Art, they remembered their young years here. During this period, Charles was already excelling in his art. While still an apprentice in an architectural studio, his innovative spirit felt too cramped in a society where industrialization and consumerism were beginning to take precedence over the essentials.
Inspired by the influence of the Côte Vermeille…
They also remembered their meeting, moments of glory, but also of doubt, through which they passed until their arrival on the Côte Vermeille. It was the return to nature and naturalistic contemplation that gradually distanced Charles and his wife from the growing tumult and rejection that his art was facing. After a career as prolific as it was difficult, the need for a well-deserved rest was felt, rest which they found in Port-Vendres from 1925 to 1927. These years were, according to them, the best years of their lives.
