If you search a hike on the Côte Vermeille which combines unspoiled nature, historical heritage and breathtaking views, head for the Madeloc Tower. Perched in the heart of the Albères massif, this ancient watchtower offers one of the most beautiful panoramas in Roussillon. With a hiking-enthusiast friend, I decided to set out to conquer this iconic peak.
Here is the story of a day full of discoveries, magnificent panoramas and little tips to live the experience to the fullest.

The Madeloc Tower: a jewel of the Albères massif

Perched at 652 meters above sea level, the Madeloc Tower is a former signal tower from the 13th century. It was once used to monitor the coast and prevent attacks. Today, it offers a unique panorama: at a glance, you can take in the sparkling Mediterranean, the Albères hills, and the typical terraced vineyards for which the Côte Vermeille is famous.
Walking to its old stones is like diving into a historical and scenic hike, where every step is a journey through time.

A departure from Battery 500

We chose to start from the Battery 500, former military defense post overlooking Port-Vendres. This is an excellent starting point to avoid the more frequented paths and enjoy a gradual climb towards the tower. Allow approximately 2 to 30 hours round trip hiking, with a moderate gradient but which, in places, requires a little effort. Equip yourself well: good shoes, water, snacks and sunscreen are essential, especially in summer.

Panoramas that are worth it

From the very first steps, the scent of the garrigue envelops us: umbrella pines, flowering heather, scents of thyme and rosemary. At every turn, the view changes: on one side, the Côte Vermeille and its turquoise coves; on the other, the vineyards climbing up the hills.
Arriving at the Tour de la Madeloc is a truly emotional moment. From up there, you can see Collioure, Port-Vendres and, on a clear day, the majestic silhouette of Canigou.
We enjoyed a simple but delicious picnic, facing this immensity, with only the breath of the wind as music...

Tips for a successful hike to the Tour de la Madeloc

  • Ideal period: spring or autumn, to avoid extreme heat
  • Equipment: hiking shoes, cap, sunglasses, sunscreen
  • Water: no drinking water point on the trail, remember to take enough with you
  • Respect: take your rubbish with you and stay on the marked trails
  • Photos: don't leave without immortalizing every view!

La Madeloc, a memory that remains

On the way back, a feeling of fullness accompanied us. Our legs were a little heavy, certainly, but our minds were light and our hearts filled with beauty. The hike to the Tour de la Madeloc is much more than an outing: it's a time travel, a breath of fresh air and a moment of connection with the unique landscapes of the Albères massif.
Whether you come alone, with friends or family, let yourself be tempted... La Madeloc awaits you, majestic, to offer you its most beautiful panoramas.

Routes to access the Madeloc Tower

Walk :

By bike :

For those who prefer to get there by car, take the Route des Crêtes (D86) at the roundabout above Collioure towards the Col de Mollo. You can stop at the old barracks and the orientation table for a pleasant view of the landscape. From here, it's about a 30m walk to reach the tower.
